It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize water’s collecting on the floor of your basement or forming a moat around your house. Assuming you don’t have a basement swimming pool and aren’t a medieval knight, then, you can be pretty sure these signs mean you have a drainage problem. Sometimes, though, drainage problems aren’t so apparent. For instance, with the following three less-obvious signs, you would never know you had a drainage problem if you didn’t know what to look for:
3 Signs You Have a Drainage Problem
1. Overflowing Gutters
If your gutter looks like a reenactment of Niagara Falls, it’s time to clean out the dead leaves and other debris that are blocking the water flow. Vertical dirt streaks on the outer edges of gutters, mud-spattered siding and vertical-peeling paint strips are all signs of overflowing gutters.
2. Dumping Downspouts
One inch of rain causes 1,000 square feet of roof to produce more than 600 gallons of runoff – which is more than enough to fill 10 bathtubs to brimming. Dumping that amount of water too close to your home’s foundation will cause it to go straight to the basement, where your flooring, furnishings and other knick-knacks will be ruined.
3. Basement Water Stains
The location of a water stain can tell you a lot about your drainage problem. It can be simple, like surface water, or it can be a little harder to deal with, like underground water.
