GCI Consultants played a crucial role in the Daytona International Speedway grandstand replacement project, a landmark renovation that transformed the iconic NASCAR venue. As the building envelope consultant, GCI was instrumental in verifying the integrity of building envelope systems throughout the stadium’s renovation. The design-build project by Barton Malow and ROSSETTI consisted of a fronstretch grandstand replacement, which included installing wider seats for spectator comfort, new club-level seating, luxury suites with advanced glazing systems, and improved building envelope components such as curtain walls, roofing systems, terrace waterproofing, and sound-dampening materials. These upgrades not only transformed the fan experience but also ensured durability and performance through innovative building envelope solutions.

Comprehensive Building Envelope Solutions

Daytona International Speedway’s project team actively sought out GCI Consultants due to our extensive experience working directly with NASCAR on prior projects, including a notable engagement at one of their prominent racetracks in Michigan. The project scope encompassed a wide range of building envelope components. However, a key component of our focus was on preventing water leaks within any of the building envelope systems, which included extensive terrace waterproofing details, terrace interfaces with glass walls, the various glazing and wall panel systems, and the many roofs that extended over these new areas. GCI’s expertise was applied to glazing, waterproofing, and roofing systems, ensuring a cohesive and high-performing exterior envelope. Our team conducted thorough reviews of shop drawings and submittals, performed glass fabricator inspections, and led pre-installation conferences to set the stage for successful implementation.

Innovative Glazing Solutions for an Enhanced Spectator Experience

GCI Consultants actively addressed a variety of unique challenges in this large project. The team worked to create the widest field of vision possible for spectators, while also minimizing, but not eliminating, the track sounds to enhance the fan experience. Additionally, they ensured that water was effectively kept out on all concourse levels through comprehensive waterproofing solutions. We assisted in determining specific glass products for the luxury boxes and devised a glazing system that maximized the field of vision for spectators. This innovative approach ensured unobstructed views of the race, enhancing the overall fan experience. Additionally, GCI recommended products to reduce track noise while maintaining the exciting atmosphere of live NASCAR events.

Advanced Waterproofing and Leak Prevention

A key focus of GCI’s services was preventing water leaks throughout the building envelope systems. This included developing extensive terrace waterproofing details, designing interfaces between terraces and glass walls, and addressing various glazing and wall panel systems. Additionally, our team focused on the numerous roofs extending over the new areas to help ensure comprehensive water protection.

Quality Assurance and Quality Control Water Penetration Testing

GCI’s commitment to quality was evident throughout the project. Beforehand, we collaborated with the design-build team to implement a customized quality assurance and control control (QA/QC) plan. As a result, our team provided pre-installation services, conducted water penetration testing throughout construction, and performed site inspections for all building envelope components. Consequently, our team implemented rigorous quality assurance measures, verifying that all systems were installed according to construction documents and performed as anticipated.

Collaboration and Consultation

Throughout the project, GCI worked closely with the Architect and General Contractor, providing expert consultation on waterproofing, roofing, and glazing systems. This collaborative approach was crucial in addressing potential field of vision issues for NASCAR fans while maintaining effective water management.

Outcome and Impact

The Daytona International Speedway grandstand replacement project, completed in time for the 2016 Rolex 24 At Daytona and DAYTONA 500, has become a shining star of the NASCAR circuit. The renovated facility now boasts wider, more comfortable seats, improved sightlines, and enhanced amenities, including twice as many restrooms and three times as many concession stands as before.

This $315 million renovation has transformed Daytona International Speedway into the world’s first motorsports stadium, providing an ultimate fan experience. The grandstand stretches over one mile in length, featuring 101,500 permanent seats, luxury suites with track-side views, and a revamped hospitality experience. Ultimately, GCI’s expertise in everything building envelope contributed significantly to the project’s success, contributing to a stadium renovation project that not only meets the highest standards of comfort and functionality but also withstands the challenging environmental conditions of a coastal Florida location.
