GCI Consultants played a pivotal role in the expansion of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) Southeastern Regional Medical Center, which became City of Hope Cancer Center Atlanta in 2022. Our team provided comprehensive building envelope consulting services for this critical healthcare facility project, helping ensure the highest standards of quality and performance throughout the duration of the project.
In 2014, the medical center retained GCI to provide quality assurance consulting services for a significant addition to the existing hospital. This expansion included a four-story clinic, a radiation center, and a surgery wing, which included numerous new roof tie-ins to existing structures (roofs, parapet walls, expansion joints).
Comprehensive Consulting and Quality Assurance During Construction
Our involvement began with a thorough review of architectural plans and specifications for all three buildings. We examined the construction documents, focusing on building envelope components to verify completeness, proper detailing, and appropriate performance criteria. This proactive approach allowed us to provide valuable insights and recommendations early in the project lifecycle.
Our team facilitated pre-installation conferences with all relevant stakeholders, including subcontractors, manufacturers, general contractors, architects, and owner’s representatives. These meetings were crucial for reviewing contract documents, approved submittals, and anticipated jobsite conditions, fostering clear communication and alignment among all parties involved. During an onsite pre-installation meeting, installation issues were highlighted and design remarks discussed with the general contractor and the roofing subcontractor to ensure a full understanding of the project requirements and to answer their questions/concerns.
Throughout the construction phase, GCI conducted regular on-site inspections to verify compliance with contract documents, approved shop drawings, and industry standards. Our team paid particular attention to critical areas such as waterproofing details at steel tie-ins and other demolition/coordination details. Also, our team inspected the new roofs during construction and after the manufacturer’s warranty inspection to ensure that the installation complied with industry standards and the design. Additionally, we witnessed 3rd-party field water infiltration testing performed by glazing subcontractors to provide an extra layer of quality assurance before the owner hired us directly to perform water penetration testing in accordance with AAMA 501.2 “Quality Assurance and Diagnostic Water Leakage Field Check of Installed Storefronts, Curtain Walls and Sloped Glazing Systems.”
Specialized Services for Healthcare Facilities
Given the unique requirements of healthcare facilities, GCI went above and beyond standard envelope consulting. During the pharmacy area renovation, we performed indoor air quality testing to certify laminar flow hoods and chemo hoods. Furthermore, we conducted testing for compliance with USP 797 standards within the compounding pharmacy areas, helping ensure a safe environment for both staff and patients.
